| I don't know how much stock to put into this, but it is interesting/scary to think about. If it's true that China is suffering a rash of rebellions as this article states, then war would be a very historically typical response by an autocratic government to try to change focus. Would the US help defend Taiwan in such a scenario? On principle, I would hope yes, but in practice, that could get very, very bloody. On the other hand, if a war were to stay conventional, you would have to make a comparison with the Korean war, in which the Chinese sent millions of troops into the Korean peninsula and fought the U.N. coalition which only had hundreds of thousands of troops at a standstill. I would think that our advantages over the Chinese since the 50's have grown considerably. | ||
