He was right to tell her about the obesity and its influence on life, but he had no right to tell her she would likely get no husband. The latter was something personal and not necessary usefull to a doctors assessment or diagnosis of the problem.
It might be right and true, but I think the woman knows this herself and doesn't need some doctor poking in her privacy.

I agree with Max.  More to the point, she could get a man, but he would likely be another hefty and unattractive man.  Even so, they might still love each other dearly.  I know a number of hefty couples whose mutual love runs as deeply as their girths.

He had every right to tell her whatever the hell he wanted just as she has every right to find another doctor. We all have the right to go out and start organizations like the National Association for the Acceptance of Fat Asses. I think the importance of this lies in whether or not we as individuals allow any legal power to be given to such politically correct notions.
Also, I think that it is very disturbing that we have a trend to accept obesity. Granted , some people are wired to carry more weight than others but all people are responsible to a much greater degree than is reported for our own health. I say as a man who is 60 lbs overweight that it should not be considered acceptable. Public shunning and stone throwing may be a bit overboard but I think these PC notions are aimed at alleviating responsibility.

I agree that we have a problem with obesity, but in a private social system, this wouldn't be a problem (everyone would pay for his own sins).
On the other side, one of the famous measurements, the BMI, is just pure crap, because even Hollywood-Beauties can get into the Obese area (Johnny Depp or Arnold Schwartzenegger f.e.).
So, how do we define obese? What is the mark that seperates normal from obese?

I still have a problem with this, because it is healthy to have some fat. The trend of super-slim models is a problem, because to be so thin has many risks for the health system (as many as being really really fat).
So, I think there are many people with "big bones", who are considered fat already, but are not. However, there is a huge problem with the next generation. When I look into the Kindergardens, I see many children who look like aerobic balls rather than human people.
This is the audience we should target, imo.

I'm not superstitious... but ... MY computer is NOT down... HEAVEN FORBID! :)  So TAKE THAT BACK, ANDREW! :)

Here is what happened:  I typically send "Horror File" items to Linz for Free Radical.  But FR went to press, and Linz didn't want to wait till the next FR was published before getting this little item out.  So he asked me to post it.  I ended up having difficulty getting on the web (while having no difficulty receiving and sending email) on Saturday night, so I asked Roger Bissell to send it in to Andrew Bissell (no relation) for posting.

So thanks Roger and Andrew for posting.  :)

Reminds me of the old joke about how a military request from battlefield to HQ got mangled en route. "Send reinforcements, we're going to advance" became "Send three-&-fourpence, we're going to a dance."

It occurs to me to wonder why DD went to Andrew via Roger rather than directly, but I daren't ask. There's always method to his madness. Or so I tell myself, but I have some men in white coats on standby in Brooklyn, just in case ... :-)

Anyway, thanks ALL for posting! :-)

I have a very simple answer to this... and Andrew knows why.

He takes FOREVER to answer an email.  You're overworking him!!! :)

So I went to the Other Bissell.  (This, of course, begs the question of how long it might take A. Bissell to reply to R. Bissell...)

Yup.

Dials men in white coats ...

Shortly after, man heard screaming, "But she *was* a dialectician, I tell you" as he's dragged into police ambulance.

What Bissell the Roger hasn't told you is that he sends me kickbacks in return for prompt replies to his emails and priority postings of his articles. It's a nice little side arrangment we've worked out, and one whose benefits DD was fortunate enough to share with Roger in this case.

Uh-h-h-h...trying to 'stay on-topic' here, I think some threads may be getting a little...obese.

P.S. As an aside (snicker), doctors nowadays clearly have to 'think twice' regarding giving not only honest information, but also advice/suggestions, and, therefore, maybe, also have to (if they haven't already !) consider whether or not staying-in-practice...is really worth it given the growing plethora of  these PC legally-protected over-'sensitive' lawsuit-searchers.

There is a growing trend to complain to the authorities when one's feelings are hurt.  Our courts have seen far too many lawsuits in this regard. Let these "victims" call 1-800-CRY-BABY.

Andrew - isn't that kind of sweeping it under the rug rather than over?
