What book did this reviewer read? And what tenor is she talking about?

Barbara

Amazon link to the book with editorial and spotlight reviews (one by Sciabarra).

While I'm not a Lanzaphile, I realized much later that many Christmas carols I heard in my childhood were sung by him. His Deck the Halls can be heard in The Polar Express.

num++: Thanks for providing the Amazon link to Armando's book. I can assure you, though, that Barbara does know which tenor and book the reviewer is referring to! She simply didn't agree with the reviewer's analysis.

I thought it was a pretty good review overall. While I don't agree with Ms. Margles' assertions that Lanza possessed "a stupefying lack of self-awareness" and that his life would have been no happier had he been an opera star, she's right when she hails this book as "compelling" and the "best telling" of Lanza's life to date.

And while I'm still on the subject of Mario, I'd like to alert everyone to his magnificent live and home recordings, six of which are now available for downloading at http://freeradical.co.nz/lanza.

My oh my... I sit corrected.

I vehemently protest the unready availabilty of sarcasm emoticons on this site.

Jeannie Ring, I filched two of yours. You had no emoticons for filching for me to filch, so I can only apologize for two.

Oh, please, borrow my favors as you wish!  ~<smooch>

I keep links to pages with emoticons on them on 'favorties', next to a Latin dictionary
and a couple of other things.  Stupid courtesan tricks.

Mmm... that gives me an idea for some *other* graphics this kender-streak girl just *has* to go look for on the net.  I'll show when I find <wicked grin>.

And to the administration: these pages need colours readily available!  I humbly submit it would make for individualistic personalization if you could alter the background color as well.

my regards,                   v

Bah, silly young'uns*. Back in the old days, we didn't have pages and pages of graphical animated emoticons to bookmark—and even if we had, no one would have liked us using them, because everyone connected with a 2400-baud modem that took forever to download graphics. No, we had to make do with artistry like :-), ;-) :*-(, :-D, X-(, and, in extreme cases where weapons just had to be drawn, cooo|==========>. And we liked it. And we argued about whether :-) or :) was the more correct version. (Silly fools who deny the reality of noses!)

Graphical smileys are always the first thing I turn off when I download messenger programs.

*Though it's ironic for me to say this, since I think Jeanine has a couple of years on me.

I had an interesing idea.

Code an HTML page with all the graphics you want, and their corresponding links. Save on the hard disk. Then bookmark it. One will have a consolidated listing of all the emoticons ready for copy-pasting, without having to open many pages.

Nature Leseul...

Back when I was young, we did not even have the luxury of ':', '-', and ')', much less the alphabet. We had to 'type' this out by switching vacuum tubes in their sockets. After three days at it, I swear I could see ENIAC smile.
