What is it that prompts people to entertain such beliefs and continue to hold them throughout a lifetime, even in the face of contrary experience? Some say it is “hope, grounded in the promises of Scripture;” others, that it is hope entertained in desperation; others, that it is “believing something you know darned well isn’t so.” For the most part, believes Sam Harris, it is the psychological difficulty or inability to face reality, the fact that “this is it” and death ends our mortal existence. If the election is as close as it was in 2000, libertarian voters may make the difference as to who wins in various critical “Battle Ground” states and therefore the presidency itself. That is the situation in which we find ourselves in 2004. And that is why I believe voting for George W. Bush is the most libertarian thing we can do. (Read more...)

In the current campaign, many libertarians are objecting that social security was not instantly privatized, that public education was not abolished, and so on; but much as we still cling to these ideals, it's hard to initiate them while one's house is on fire. (Read more...)
